I had a wonderful day yesterday, I returned to a secondary school for the second year to teach a Printmaking Workshop to 45 Year 10 pupils. We made botanical monoprints, layered details, used an etching press and then every pupil carved and printed their own linocut for the very first time ! All pupils were an absolute joy to teach, I was over the moon to hear ‘This is sic !’ High praise indeed for the printmaking reveal process 😉 I was also delighted to see the amazing GCSE exam pieces on display which were inspired by the printmaking workshop from last year. Just great to work with teenagers who were so keen, inspired and engrossed in a new process ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #printmakingprocess #printmakingworkshop #arttalent #inspiring

Great to return to Etching Wednesdays. I enjoyed inking up this steel plate with coral pinks and a la poupée yellow which blends in well to show the centre of the peony. One of my favourites. Look forward to some new experimental zinc and steel plates this term. #etchings #printmaker #printmakersofinstagram #originalartwork #originalprint #alapoupee #peony

Even better when it’s big enough to hide behind ! Always exciting to see a print come to life for the first time after many, many hours of carving. This linocut is ‘Floral Chorus’ it’s 35 cm by 35 cm it includes roses, peonies, echinacea, hollyhocks, poppies and more ! I’m going to make solid colour prints and also a original prints with a mix of pinks, cerise, greens and yellows and blue inks. I’ll post pictures later this week, all prints will be available to buy on my website next week or message me for more information.

I’m going to make solid colour prints and also a original prints with a mix of pinks, cerise, greens and yellows and blue inks. Combining many favourite flowers onto one new large floral linocut print. The early stages of letting the flowers flow together and allow movement just as they do in the garden borders. My Grandad used to grow amazing dahlias and now my sister and I also love growing dahlias. So many shapes and sizes in a rainbow of colours. I grow them in the garden and at the allotment. I have tried to capture them in a reduction linocut which took a long time to complete ! I only have 16 prints which I will post on my website on Friday. My new print ‘ Summer Breeze’ celebrates lazy summer days, blue skies, gentle green leaves and pink sunsets. It’s wonderful to be one of 12 resident artists at The Wisley Gallery and here is the print which I hung today, along with some of the beautifully crafted pieces, such as @naomibeevers handsome 🐦‍⬛. You can also see ‘Orchids’ and ‘Beneath the Cherry Blossom’ prints in the third photo. My print is available to buy framed at The Wisley Gallery or unframed from my website. Funny how a print can look so different with a new ink colour. This pink suits the beautiful weather and rose season. I’m very lucky that I don’t have to go far for inspiration. I have had an allotment for 16 years and I love it ! Half a plot that’s bursting with more flowers than veg- poppies, peonies, love in a mist, marigolds, sweet William, irises and many more. I love the freedom and the quiet time I spend there. It’s full of bees too- this bumble bee was a whopper. Cafe au Lait dahlia print ! It took forever to mix the colour but I got there in the end. I grow Cafe au Lait every year and now I can have one all year round captured in print form. Cafe au Lait dahlia print ! It took forever to mix the colour but I got there in the end. I grow Cafe au Lait every year and now I can have one all year round captured in print form. Ever wondered how to make a print from an etching plate ? After making the plate with soft ground and then layers of aquatint in and out of acid which can take anything from a few hours to a day’s work. You then carefully ink the plate with a small piece of cardboard. I did this one-handed so all the videos are a bit hesitant ! Then you use scrim to push the ink into the bitten lines. Then clean with a cleaner scrim and tissue paper. Then use a registration plate and damp paper placed on top of the plate. Through the press. Peel and reveal. Final layer 4 of reduction print done and dusted. The Cherry Blossom tree prints are finished and hanging up to dry in the sunshine. It’s very nerve wracking almost destroying the Lino and stripping it back to the trees and branches. I love my garden in May, everything looks so fresh and beautiful. The poppies are amazing this year, so many buds and the white and purple hesperis look suitably floaty ! I’m so lucky to have my Art cabin at the bottom of the garden with floral inspiration right in front of me. Answers please ! Especially as I’ve have been unable to work out how to do a fancy poll on the picture. Which do you prefer the first print or the second ?
The first print is a great mistake as it’s a 2 plate 3 colour print and I accidentally put the second plate on upside down 🙃. The second image is the correct way up ! I think I prefer the first one. The Lily of the Valley have more depth and is flows. I’d love to hear what you think 🤔.

May is peony season ! I love peonies so much, they start as closed buds then slowly open and bloom. Then their petals change colour and become sculptural. I used the wonderful lines on the petals to create the sketch, then made a soft ground etching print to try to capture this moment. This print will last forever, peonies in full bloom. My French Grandmother Simone always gave a small bunch of Lily of the Valley to us all on 1st May, a lovely French tradition. I’m lucky that it grows happily in our front garden. This Robin’s nest etching was inspired by a beautiful nest complete with 5 speckled eggs that I found in my compost heap at my allotment on Sunday. So perfectly formed. I took a quick photo and left the nest and area completely undisturbed. I just hope they hatch in a few weeks. The etching and aquatint took all day to create.
